Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is a portal, anyway?

A. Broadly defined, a web portal is a single place on the internet that provides access to resources and services of interest to those who share a common interest. A community web site that offers users the ability to do things like publish a calendar of events, post articles and discuss topics of local interest is an example. Another example is a website that allows a business to communicate and coordinate with its customers, distributors and suppliers. A portal may share some characteristics of a web log or "blog" in that it provides an online forum for communication between and among interested parties, but is distinguished by a much wider range of capabilities and services.

Q. Who should consider developing a portal?

A. Some examples include:

  • Local business or business association
  • Neighborhood historical society
  • Attractions - e.g. zoos, museums, historical sites
  • Non-profits - e.g. local watershed preservation, training for first responders

Q. How does wireless fit in?

A. Through Portalize, a portal developed in conjunction with a Wi-Fi hot spot has the potential to be an interactive reference guide for your neighborhood. This means that anyone with a laptop or other portable device that provides wireless access to the internet can get information on where to dine, where to shop, and what to do. For businesses, Portalize can be used to help promote products and services, and also to operate more efficiently by improving coordination among enterprise stakeholders.

Q. Come again on "The Future of Community."

A. Not because we expect virtual communities to replace physical ones. With a robust ability to support location-based interactive services, Portalize is designed to strengthen your visibility and presence in an emerging age of burgeoning wireless access and adoption. Thus "The Future of Community."

Q. How much do I need to know about web publishing to use Portalize?
